ToyCon 2015: Reconnected with the Geek Inside
The experience was definitely new but it felt so familiar at the same time. It was like travelling in a foreign country. You are the stranger who knows nobody. You should be scared but the scenery felt so comfortable, to the extent that it reminds you of your home. Attending Toycon reminded me of home.
Growing up with a geeky father who’s a fan of Marvel heroes, DC heroes and Star Wars explains my fascination with stuffs like this. I tried to rub it off as I reached adulthood, trying to emit a more sophisticated and lady-like façade but nope.. THE GEEK PREVAILED!
Toycon is one of the biggest conventions that occur annually in the Philippines. 2015 is the year we celebrate their 14th year of giving opportunities for the aficionados of toys, gaming, comics, anime and cosplay to come together in a 3-days-event (June 19-21, 2015) at SM Megatrade Halls 1, 2 and 3, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City. With just 150 php for the entrance ticket, one could join the fun-filled activities prepared for all Toycon goers and refuel your geekiness
One of the main attractions of Toycon was the world of DC Comics. Top on the list of DC heroes are Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman.
We happened to meet Batman roaming around the place before my sister Anna got attacked by his arch enemy the Clown Prince of Crime-Joker. It was no joke how scared my sister was! Tough luck! He was so realistic!
They also highlighted some upcoming movies such as the long-awaited, live-action Attack on Titan and the heart-melting Doraemon: Stand By Me 3D movie. We were able to take pictures with the adorable cast of the movie Doraemon: Stand By Me after a long line. Totally worth it!
On a geekier note, Star Wars has launched the new Star Wars Rebels series which were emphasized on the merchandise that were sold on the event. But of course, nothing beats the original film saga.
Stating the obvious, there were a lot of awesome toys to choose from and you get to feast your eyes with the rarest and coolest action figure collectibles from various collectors. Some are for sale but most were for viewing only. Collectors all around the country offers this rare opportunity to showcase their collections and share them to other people who has the same passion as theirs.
Last but definitely not the least, we were able to see Asia’s Cosplay Queen, Alodia Gosiengfiao together with her sister Ashley known for her remarkable singing prowess. Obviously, wherever the Queen was, a mob follows. Well, at least I got a little bit closer to her somehow!
Look at the Queen cosplaying GoGo Tomago of Big Hero 6. Too bad, I didn’t get the chance to take a picture with her.
I also spent a few minutes with the King of the Cosplay Queen’s heart, Erik Ejercito. A self-confessed geek, artist, painter, figure customizer and supporter of Alodia. I’m starting to become a fan as well. Creative people inspire me.
