One of the places we were able to visit was the
centuries-old watchtower in Barangay Victoria, Luna, La Union. I must say, the
place captivated us right away. It was simple yet beautiful, and despite the
lack of anything else to do in the area, the spectacular view of the sea from
the watchtower can make you hold your breath for a moment. There’s also
something very surreal in standing in a place where people once stood to
protect their fellow countrymen. This watchtower was used to warn the coastal
towns of La Union from Japanese, Chinese and Moro pirates.
There are so many reasons on why you should visit La Union’s
Baluarte Watchtower and here are some of the reasons why I recommend that you
check out this 401-year-old watchtower:
*It is classified as a national treasure in 2014
Since being considered as a national treasure, there were
various studies done to preserve the watchtower on that scenic beach. The walls
were already tilting and the land where it was standing was already eroding. Hence, the reason why it was was

Yet, the Filipinos were stronger. Despite the strong typhoon
Lando in 2015 splitting it in half, La Union’s local government was able to
restore the watchtower.
The restored Baluarte of Luna, La Union was a combination of
the original materials and new light colored red bricks.
*It gives you an
amazing view
This amazing structure is facing the West Philippine Sea, a
bottomless repository of pebbles of various sizes and colors. No wonder Luna is
known as the Pebble Capital of the North.
*It’s free
There’s no entrance fee/ environmental fee or whatever fee.
You get to see this place at no cost. There’s definitely no reason for you not
to see it.
